The Coffin of Iy-neferty
The coffin of Iy-neferty, a Theban woman from the New Kingdom, exemplifies many of the aforementioned changes to coffin depictions. The exterior of the coffin (1) depicts her in a masculine way in all but her hair, which is shown in a traditionally feminine style. The interior (2), however, shows her in a feminine position with one arm laid across her chest & the other on her thigh, & in the white gown, here a long dress, which for a man would be designed in a more masculine style (Cooney). On both the exterior & interior, Iy-neferty is given a darker, masculine complexion, the keystone to her androgynous appearance.
